AVD Application Couldn’t Connect to the Managed Resource Because of an Orchestration Error

Introduction: #

The orchestration error is similar to walking through a tunnel and losing signal and not getting the signal back on the other side. Sometimes you have to turn your phone off and on or refresh the signal by cycling the cellular radio. Per Microsoft “An orchestration error in Azure Virtual Machines (VMs) can occur when trying to connect to the remote server. The error message may say that the user was unable to connect due to an orchestration error. However, the user may be able to log in via the web client.”

You are attempting to login to the AVD desktop application but get the following error “We couldn’t connect to the managed resource because of an orchestration error.”

Resolution: #

Here are few items to check to resolve the error

  1. Network Connectivity: Verify that the you have a reliable network connectivity to the Azure Virtual Desktop environment. If there are network issues or restrictions, it can lead to connectivity problems. Test the connectivity from different locations and networks if possible. When you disconnect, you may lose the ability to use your certificates or CAC within the AVD environment.
  2. AVD Workspace Enrollment: Double-check that you enrolled into the Army AVD program. Many users mistake the fact that simply because they have an Army email, they will have automatic access to the Army AVD workspace. Incorrect. You must complete enrollment into the Army AVD program.
  3. Server Refresh: You may get this error if you have been idle too long, lose connection, or due to other network disruptions. Simply click the refresh button to reload the most up-to-date resources for the server you are using. We recommend refreshing both servers at least twice a month.
    • NOTE: When you refresh, you need to have your CAC inserted as you may have to revalidate your access to the server.
  4. Application Access: Check to see if the application has access to your network and your CAC reader. You need to enable all of the necessary permissions to access the Azure Virtual Desktop resources.
